Cabinetry 101-Door Construction

There are 3 main types of door construction in cabinetry.

  • Traditional Overlay: Overlay refers to how much of the face frame is covered by the cabinet door.  A traditional overlay generally leaves approx. 1 1/4″ of face frame exposed around the entire door.
  • Full Overlay:  The doors in this style will cover the majority of the face frame giving a more custom look.  Full overlay make up the majority of cabinet sales at this time
  • Inset: With this construction, the doors are inset to face frame allowing for a very sleek and custom look.  The one drawback to inset cabinetry comes in high humidity areas due to expansion and contraction.  Inset cabinetry should only be used in climate controlled homes.

Cabinetry 101- Wood Vs. MDF Doors

When deciding on cabinetry, choosing between wood doors or MDF doors is something that must be considered.  First of all, what is MDF?  MDF stands for medium density fiberboard.  This is a wood remnant product that is bound together very densely with resins.  The traditional thought is that wood doors are superior to MDF.  Wood that is left natural or stained provides a beautiful and durable kitchen or bathroom.  MDF has seen emergence in recent years due to the popularity of painted cabinets.  By using MDF for painted cabinets, you will not see cracking at the joints due to expansion and contraction that is typical of painted wood cabinets.
